I particularly like blasting and ripping away at half-human swarms and hordes of space bugs in shooters like Gears of War. And I gotta admit, I do like the cut of their jib at Activision. I dips me lid to the way that, having been criticised for the violent content of their first SoF release, they came back and made the sequel about a hundred times worse. In fact, I so respected that crotch-grabbing, in-your-face disrespect for moral authority that I ran right out and bought the game. And it rocked. I'm sure Pay Back rocks even more. Some of the bloodsplatters and waves of gore in the screenshots I've seen are mondo impressivo. Still - big, big sigh - I guess we do have to acknowledge that there has to be a line somewhere that we won't cross. A new genre? Graphic first person sexual violence with completely defenceless, innocent victims, anyone? It is undeniably sick and wrong to get your jollies violently dismembering human bodies with a grab bag of high-powered weapons. I'm not saying it ain't fun. Oh, man, it can be sooo much fun. And I have done exactly the same thing in my own novels, as do Stephen King and a host of other writers, some of them trashy, some not. But apart from Brett Easton Ellis, none of us ever got banned or shrink-wrapped to protect the public. When you come down to it, which is worse? Gore or its absence? The opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan, with their realistic and grotesque depictions of what actually happens to soft, vulnerable human bodies when struck by explosive forces or fast moving pieces of metal? Or a good old fashioned John Wayne movie, with it's demure little rose petals of blood and valiant death, with stirring speeches by fading heroes who appear not so much shot to pieces as a little bit tired, and perhaps in need of a nice lie down to get over the line of .50 cal tracer rounds that just stitched them up? I honestly don't know.
